In 2013 I left everything behind, and moved to Matakohe for six months… Two years ago, today.

My Step-Father, John, had been diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years earlier. He’d been fighting the good fight, and participated in the trial of a new treatment, with promising results. Despite this, the cancer found it’s way in to his bones, and we were told he may leave us around Christmas.

It all happened very quickly: A beautiful spot in Matakohe was purchase, so John could live his dream for what ever time he had left. My brother moved back from the US (after over a decade living there), took over my Christchurch apartment, and started work in the family business. I turned down a couple of jobs, packed what I could in to my car, and drove north in to the unknown.

“Matakohe Haven” was born, and an educational couple of years followed. John passed away on May 30th, 2015.

Starting with the first shot I captured here, and including some others I’ve not published before, here’s a few images to mark the day.
