This is a photograph printed on canvas and stretched over a wooden frame, so it arrives as an object rather than a sheet of paper. There is no glass, no frame to choose, and nothing to assemble. It hangs on the wall as it comes.
The canvas is a poly-cotton blend at 344 gsm, and it is acid-free and pH neutral. That matters more than it sounds: acidity is what turns paper brittle and yellow over decades, and a neutral canvas does not have that problem. The print is textured, so colours sit slightly softer than they do on paper, and the surface takes light differently through the day.
The canvas is hand-stretched over solid wood stretcher bars and is 3.18 cm deep. The manufacturer describes the canvas as fade resistant and OBA free, which means no optical brightening agents were added to the coating.
It arrives with mounting brackets included. You supply the wall fixings, because the right fixing depends on whether your wall is brick, plasterboard or timber.
Sizes
12 x 12 in - 30.5 x 30.5 cm
16 x 16 in - 40.6 x 40.6 cm
18 x 24 in - 45.7 x 61.0 cm
24 x 36 in - 61.0 x 91.4 cm
The two square sizes suit a single image as a focal point above a piece of furniture. 18x24 is the usual first canvas. 24x36 is the statement size.
Canvas sizes include squares, and a square crop cuts the sides off a landscape photograph. If the composition matters to you, check the preview before you order, or choose art paper, where every size keeps the full frame.
The honest difference between canvas and paper is texture. Canvas is woven, so it holds a photograph slightly soft; paper is smooth, so it holds it sharp. You can see the weave at close range and you cannot see it from across the room. If the photograph is about fine detail, paper shows more of it. If the photograph is about colour and mood, canvas holds its own and needs no framing to look finished.
Canvas also wins on practicality. There is no glass to clean, no reflection to fight, and nothing to break. A canvas in a hallway with a window at the end of it stays readable, where a framed print would mirror the window back at you.
Colours may vary slightly from what you see on screen. The canvas texture also softens fine transitions, so a gradient that looks perfectly smooth on a monitor will show a little weave up close.
The reverse of the canvas carries a printed manufacturer label. It is on the back, where nobody sees it, but it is there.
What arrives
The canvas arrives stretched and boxed, wrapped in tissue with bubble wrap or foam around it. Mounting brackets are in the box. There is no wire, no screws and no drill bit, because the right fixing depends on your wall.
Hang it from two points rather than one so it sits level, and use a fixing rated for the weight of the size you bought.
Dust it with a soft dry cloth. Do not wipe it with a wet cloth, and do not use sprays or solvents; on canvas they can leave a tide mark in the weave.
Looking after it
Keep it out of direct sun and dust it with a soft dry cloth. The full care guide, including which walls take the most sun in each hemisphere, is on the Print Care page.
